Synopsis
This feasibility study seeks to find an answer to the question whether it is feasible to set up a return and recycling program for office furniture. The aim of this study is also to employ low-skilled workers. The intention is thus not only to realize a program that is financially feasible, but at the same time to see if this study meets a well-considered socially responsible recycling program. Also the possibility whether any old furniture can be restored, or dismantled for reuse of components will be examined.
Objectives
The specific reason is to establish a financially viable and socially justified return and recycling program for office furniture. Promoters are Steelcase and Van Gansewinkel who wish to set up a pilot project in Flanders that can be evaluated and scaled at a relatively short notice within the region Benelux.
The first central question: is it financially profitable to select old office furniture from the waste stream, to recover for reuse, dismantling for reuse of components and effectively to be recycled from the recyclable components? This requires a closer examination of the cost and income factors in the take-back and recycling business. This will be verified by means of a limited pilot project launched in Flanders. At the same time the employment potential is evaluated. What is the profile of the workers who can perform this type of business reuse, recovery and possible recycling? The minimum required competencies and training skills and/or certificates will be looked at carefully. Finally, the estimated number of FTE employment that can be created for the overall feasibility study will be estimated.
The second central question: How can the business model and the partnership between Steelcase, Van Gansewinkel and Levanto further be developed? What will be the form of this cooperation (eg legal, integration enterprise ...) and how will the core activities of these companies within this consortium operationally be set up and aligned.
