Synopsis
This study uses as it’s starting point an example of a typical bio-energy village in Germany, namely in Jühnde. Due both to cultural and legislative differences the German model cannot simply be copied to the Flemish context and thus must be adapted considering Flemish culture and legislation.
Objectives
The focus of this project is directed towards the local and participatory sustainability of closed biomass cycles with maximum energy recovery.
The study will be addressed in two phases. In the first phase the purpose is to investigate the feasibility of translating the German concept of "bio energy village" to the Flemish context. In a second stage, the constraints and the approach used will be tested in at least one concrete example. As a result, the intention is to obtain a roadmap that shows practically what, where and under what conditions this is possible, and how local support can be obtained for implementing this concept in practice.
This approach starts from the current Flemish situation and will create a framework wherein such sustainable materials and renewable energy projects can grow. Additionally, the purpose is to test this framework in practice. The practical test also aims to identify the concrete barriers for such initiatives and eventually to propose specific practical solutions for policy recommendations.
