Synopsis
A recycling study of roof bitumen in view of the reuse in high-end applications. Three types of waste are considered: production waste, cutting and demolition waste. On the technological point of view, there is no problem for recycling, but a more particular study on the logistical and economic aspects is needed. Moreover, a lot of the bituminous waste has a volatile composition which makes it impossible to perform the processing by one type of company.
Objectives
Activities which will be performed within the framework of this study focus on a detailed overview of the main question and to be able to provide an answer to all questions that are needed in order to achieve the main purpose of the study, namely:
- Evaluating the use of bituminous waste (of roof membranes) for high-quality applications;
- And as such, diminish the consumption and dependency on “virgin” bitumen in the near future.
To this end the project is divided into four work packages in which activities are grouped.
- WP 1: Research on the specifications of the starting material (bituminous waste) which can be used by end users.
- WP 2: Evaluation of the actual logistic aspects and examination of what is needed for the future in order to guarantee an optimal reuse of the starting material.
- WP 3: Evaluation of the economic feasibility of different scenarios for the reuse of bituminous waste.
- WP 4: Coordination of the studies / consortium activities
